We've rambled enough about third places and our goals here at Cove now. Let's start with something slightly different to the normal top 10 restaurants in Manchester vibe. On the back of our Rising Third Places thought, we wanted to write about some of the best ways to get out into nature when you need a break from our great City. So, here's a small number of our favourites.

Just an hour's drive from Manchester, the Peak District is renowned for its stunning vistas and varied terrain. Among its many walks, the Mam Tor circuit stands out. Starting from the quaint village of Castleton, a moderate 3-mile loop—the Mam Tor circular walk—takes you up the ridge of Mam Tor, affectionately known as the 'Mother Hill.' The summit offers panoramic views of the rolling hills and valleys that characterize this ancient landscape, draped in a tapestry of green and gold.

For those seeking a quieter path, Dovedale offers a gentler but equally rewarding experience. This 6-mile trek starts from Ilam Park and meanders along the River Dove, with its famous stepping stones and dramatic limestone ravines. It’s an enchanting route that captures the pastoral beauty of the Peak District, ideal for families and leisurely walkers looking for a longer, yet peaceful walk.

Finally, for anyone looking for a day out that involves a little more than a walk through nature (pub lunch anyone?) head over to Hebden Bridge. With many gorgeous walks, some great food and drink options and a regular market; Hebden really is a great way to get away from the City via car or train. Have a stop at The White Lion whilst you're there for some top tier pub food.

The Lake District

Further north, the Lake District beckons with its dramatic landscapes and poetic associations. About a two-hour drive from Manchester, it’s a haven for more ambitious walkers. Helvellyn, one of the area's highest peaks, provides a challenging but exhilarating climb. The route through Striding Edge is a heart-pounding scramble that rewards the brave with breathtaking views of the surrounding fells and lakes.

For a less strenuous but equally stunning experience, the walk around Derwentwater is a must. This 10-mile circuit takes you around the lake, often referred to as the "Queen of the Lakes." With opportunities to explore wooded shores, hidden coves, and quiet inlets, it’s a perfect day trip for those who want to soak in the serene beauty of the Lake District.

Both the Peak District and Lake District offer a reprieve from the pace of city life, where the air is fresher and the views are inspiring. Whilst not traditional third places, these trails can certainly act as such with some good company.

Maybe we'll even organise an excursion from Manchester for a few like minded people over the 2024 summer. Interested? Drop us an email.
